As part of the Razer zGold Giveaway, I got a pair of the Razer Kraken Pro V2 in white. At first, I was very excited about it and I had very much preferred receiving a new headset as opposed to the keyboard since I’m not a gamer. With a name such as “Kraken”, I was expecting some epic things with this.
The headset is pretty simple and I liked how spongy and soft the leatherette ear pads are. The Kraken Pro comes in either oval or round ear pads and what I have here are the round ones. Due to its thickness, it already cuts back quite a lot of noise even before playing any music through the headpiece.
It comes with a fully retractable mic, which I found quite cool. There’s a simple manual with 2 Razer logo stickers inside. The audio wire comes with a removable audio splitter for the mic input as well as the stereo output. This means that you can technically, remove the splitter and use it as a simple audio headset.
What I also liked about the headset is that it’s really quite lightweight and with the spongy top as well, it rests very comfortably on the head. This would make a lot of sense for gamers who play for hours with their headsets. The fact that it starts off really small and can be retracted to a huge range of head sizes is also a plus point with me because a lot of the headsets that I’ve used before were all manufactured with European or American head sizes in mind, which are often too large.
Now, onto what I didn’t like about the Razer Kraken. It is mainly the sound quality. I currently use a Beyerdynamic DT 231 Pro, which is a entry to mid-level headset and I have been spoilt. The Razer Kraken does not compare if you’re into sound quality. The bass sounded quite dampened and the audio isn’t very crisp. It also sounded as if the audio was coming in stronger on one side instead of stereo. Mind you, it’s not great but it’s not bad.
I can’t use it on my iMac cos I can’t find the mic jack anywhere (LOL) and that would mean that I can only use it on my phone and since I’m using the iPhone 8…I have to get the audio to lightning jack? As such, I’m not hanging up my DT 231 Pro as of yet but I am selling this Razer Kraken Pro V2 on Carousell.
In my opinion, the Razer Kraken Pro V2 is great for those who want a simple gamer headset and isn’t too fussy about audio quality. In other words, it’s functional.
